I don't know if any of you are techies, and might therefore come across the
likes of StackOverflow, ServerFault and SuperUser... but the StackExchange
system has now been turned creating help forums for many other subjects,
including gaming.... so they now have the following sites:

http://gaming.stackexchange.com/
http://rpg.stackexchange.com/
http://gamedev.stackexchange.com/

We aware: this a 'factual' question and answer sites, so (unlike USENET)
discussion as such is frowned upon....

That's an idiotic statement.

I have been writing software professionally for twenty years and I've never
seen a forum question that didn't elicit multiple answers.

With a propensity to fly off the handle like that, it must have been a
testing time for your customers/employers.

A more reasoned person would have understood that a single paraphrased line
would be no substitute for going to the site(s) in question and reading
their FAQs, which would have given more fuller and more contextual answer,
or perhaps even responding to a post with a question asking for
clarification.

Seeing as you did (not) ask so nicely, I'll explain myself a bit better. You
are asked to "avoid asking questions that are subjective, argumentative or
require extended discussion". "This is not a discussion board, this is a
place for questions that can be answered."

Clearly different people have different opinions on the best answer to a
given question, and some debate is necessary, but it's not a place to 'wax
lyrical' as you might choose to do here. In general, the quality of an
answer is indicated by upvoting. Or downvoting, of course.

It's also partially moderated, and substantially self-moderating, so
comments like "That's an idiotic statement" don't do down too well.

It's probably not your kind of place.

Go to the site/don't go to the site...

Didn't I sell it to you? That's because I wasn't trying to. It was a brief
heads-up because it might be of interest to people here. I have no other
connection to them than being a member of one or more Stackexchange sites. I
don't care whether you visit or not, or whether you agree with the premise
or the rules, whether you like my turn of phrase or not. Visit it, or don't
visit it. It's that simple.

Never heard of it? That's why I posted here. If notbody tells you about
these places, how are you supposed to find out?

What? Did you expect a 5000 word treatise on the features of these services
before you'd contemplate using google to check-up on the sites to
reassure-yourself, and actually visiting the site themselves?

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=stack+exchange

Look, it's a question and answer site following a very successful format (it
appears), and not yet another discussion forum. Don't like it? Fine. Don't
go there.

If you do fancy asking a question about a particular computer game, or
perhaps if you have a question about RPG games, or web
design/GIS/electronics & robotics/science fiction/graphic design/etc... then
check out Stack Exchange.

You won't get to be as argumentative and obnoxious as you are on here, but
you might find something helpful or interesting. Or are these the negative
connotations you were fearing?

So. That's the quality and cleverness of the posts we are to expect?

OK, nice. I added "gaming" & "rpg" to my Favorites.

ONE caution:

The sites use OpenID which can use Facebook and other social-sites for
logon authorization, required if you want to POST questions.

Users may want to consider privacy issues using the StackExchange
sites. The issue is, do you WANT your Facebook, Tweeter, or other
information on OpenID?

Example, one of the oldest *privacy protection* protocols is NOT to
use your real name.

No, it uses OpenID and you can use Facebook as your OpenID provider (or
google, yahoo, AOL, verisign, blogger, wordpress etc...).

Facebook is the (potential) privacy issue. There are no OpenID privacy
issues whatsoever -it's simply an open authentication standard. So use an
OpenID provider that you trust. In my book, that means not Facebook.
