Good opportunity to see what all the fuss has been about if you can grab it in
time.

[Cliffs of Dover on sale]
GetGames has also a sale on simulations with the same offer (24 hours
only):
http://www.getgamesgo.com/category/simulation-sale

also

IL2 1946 for €2.49
Lots of Silent Hunters
H.A.W.X (2) + AddOn
Cities XLs
Railroad stuff

but these are all on offer for 1 week I guess.

Anybody knows something about this "Take On Helicopters" that they
also offer?

Missed it. Still $50 at Amazon and Steam. Not sure if it's worth it.

It's definitely worth having, but not at full price unless you're a hardcore IL2
fan... and you're clearly not or you'd have bought it by now. :-)

I'm sure it shines as an online sim, but that's not something I'm interested in
(mainly because the Flanker 1.5 online ladder made me realise I'm even worse at
this than I am at online racing!) and the offline combat hasn't become any more
involving (for me) than it was in previous versions.

IIRC I don't have a system powerful enough to run it. What's the copy
protection like on the boxed DVD version?

No idea, sorry. I can't remember the last time I bought a physical copy of
anything.

Not after reading the reviews I did! Although I have read that the US
version has been mostly fixed or improved.

Seems to run fine on my system though had some issues getting the
controls working properly. Lends itself to using a TrackIR more than
the old view keys. After messing with it for a while I re-joined Aces
High as it re-lit the bug and I must say COD is beautiful but if you
want to dogfight try Aces High...

Thanks. Not really into MP games/sims.

I just bought Cliffs of Dover for $7.52 from Amazon and it is on it's
way already!!!

Looking forward to seeing what the fuss is all about, but not
downloading all the patches!

Sounds like a bargain. At that price nobody can be disappointed and everyone has an
excuse to pick it up. :-) It's not a good sign for the longevity of the project,
but who knows. Perhaps it will generate a lot of money in the way Steam sales can
generate cash for fading projects.

I actually bought MS Flight and Take on Helicopters in the recent Steam sale.
Flight surprised me by looking better than I expected and flying... well,
acceptably.

As someone who always moaned about hardcore sims forgetting to make missions
engaging, the fairly silly missions in light did actually suck me in a little, and
kept my flying right up to the point where I bought Take On.

That thing is hard! Mainly because I'm flying with a mouse because I can't work out
how to get my stick(s) working. I probably haven't tried hard enough, mainly
because flying with the mouse isn't too bad.

Landing with the mouse control is a different matter. Haven't cracked that yet...
possibly because I'm very rusty.

I also downloaded DCS World last week. Nice to get the 25T for free, but I'm still
on strike when it comes to handing over money to Eagle. I can't help feeling
they're taking the proverbial piss with the different versions of existing products.
I'd be more tolerant if the prices were sensible, but they're not, and paying twice
for the same thing winds me up.... says the man who's spent a fortune on iRacing.

Maybe I'm being unfair, and my bitterness over the long wait for an AFM Su-27 has
made me unreasonable. :-)
