I've been a long time away from the civilian flight sim scene, having
been a member of an online squadron flying IL-2. But I've finally got a
bit bored with trying to shoot people down, so today I bought a copy of
FSX, looking to get back into civ flight simming.

I am looking for tips on where to get decent freeware for aircraft,
scenery etc.

Aircraftwise, my preferences would be '50's & '60's jets, Trident, 727,
that sort of thing. I also wouldn't mind strapping on something like a
century series jet, Hawker Hunter etc etc

Longer term I would consider paying for stuff.

I am also vaguely interested in the online scene with ATC etc etc, but
don't know how that works at all.

In general, avsim.com and flightsim.com also sim-outhouse.com if you
want military.

For vintage stuff California Classic www.calclassic.com has propliners
and also some retro-grade aiport scenery and also Historic Jetliners
Group http://www.simviation.com/hjg/main.htm I think both these groups
actually use avsim and fltsim libraries to host their freeware.

Note that most stuff designed for FS9 aka FS2004 century of flight will
work directly in FSX or can be modded to do so.

For online with ATC the main options are vatsim.net or ivao.org

You should also check out the alt.games.microsoft.flight.sim usenet
group. It's still quite active (just killfile the resident troll).

Yeah, it got so bad there I eventually unsubscribed to that group -
should still be some good folks left though that can help out.
