Could use a decent WWI flight sim, but having a
hard time at it.

1) Rise of Flight: Impossible authentication issues,
"log in incorrect", "license key invalid", etc.
Game becomes invalid if you change email accounts.

2) Over Flanders Fields: Again, installation nightmare,
a 12 step process of patches and file tweeking and
update files that refuse to open.

3) Red Baron II: A great old favorite, but runs way too
fast on any machine built in this decade.

Are there any good off-the-shelf sims out?

Small wonder so many of us are hanging on to XP.

Why does a game require constant online verification?

If I buy the software why do I have to remain logged
in at all times to use it just to verify I bought it?

Even Microsoft is not that paranoid..................

the truth is, the game itself is a trojan- if you need to be online to
play, then your system is open and exposed for them ( or perhaps one
or more insiders ) to access; the nature and topic of the sim is of
less interest to kids and more sophisticates who are more likely to be
better established and less tech savy makes the delivery better
targeted

You need to look at WOFF (Wings over Flanders Fields) just released in Dec 2013. It is a re-write of Over Flanders Fields from the ground up and is 10 times more impressive. Details of this fine sim can be found at the following link:

http://www.flightsim.datagrind.com/index.php?ContentID=3

This is the product of a small dedicated development team with a view to producing a historically accurate sim and scenarios. THe AI in this sim are very intelligent and unpredictable in action. This team is quick to react to issues with patches that arrive within a couple of days for resolution.

It is a must see.
