Yup, the beta is over and we can now enjoy some a10c goodness. A quick
warning about the http downloads - I downloaded 5 gig and all 3 files were
corrupt. Downloading via their torrent link seems far more reliable.

“DCS: A-10C WARTHOG” Released

Minimal system requirements
Operating system: 64-bit Windows XP, Vista, and 7

They can't be serious... 64 bit only??? WTF. That's going to limit
their sales substantially...

Seriously??

I think the aging LOMAC codebase must have become so bloated it won't squeeze into
32 bits any more. ;-)

There must be a 32-bit option, surely? Still, this is ED we're talking about. They
always did have some "interesting" ideas.

Personally I'm struggling to get motivated enough to hand over 30ukp for this. I
never got my money's worth out of Flaming Cliffs or Black Shark, and I really do
feel I've bought enough versions of the LOMAC code already... LOMAC, LOMAC Gold, FC,
BS, and now A-10.

No, I just can't get motivated. Besides, they still owe me an Su-27 with AFM! That
still seems to be about 20 years off, and by then I'll be too busy eating baby food
and being drip-fed Prozac in an old folks' home to do any flying.

I have a hard time spending $60 US on a sim with no dynamic campaign.

I have a hard time spending $60 US on a sim with no dynamic
campaign.
Well, I do still have that nagging, preachy voice at the back of my head which says
"any sim is better than no sim: support developers!"

But that's the same voice which cost me about $750 on iRacing before I realised I
was certifiably insane, and quit. So I'm feeling more mean-spirited these days. And
poorer. :-)

A dynamic, involving campaign has always been what flight sims needed to keep them
from being dry, lifeless experiences. But as that requires effort and imagination
(which was apparently lacking over this last decade) devs turn to multiplayer to
disguise their weaknesses.

That's fine for those who like to schedule their lives around software, and I'm
sure it can be superb when it works well. But I like software to be scheduled
around my life, so I've never been big on multiplayer... and I'm especially
suspicious of ED's move towards a master server connection no matter what kind of
multiplayer you want to try.

Still, once A10 gets cheap enough I'll buy it. However whenever I look at the
tarted up promo vids I see the same product I've bought before. The instrument
changes, but the song remains the same.</riff>

PS This talk about dynamic campaigns has just reminded me how upset I was when EECH
was the end of the Razorworks development line. That was the last thing which, for
me anyway, showed real dynamic promise. Still, the good news is that there's a DOS
emulator for the iPhone and maybe one day someone will work out how to run Tornado
or Falcon 3.0 on it. I'd be forced to buy an iPhone then even though I (quite
irationally) despise Apple's ecosystem. :-)

That's why I always seem to fall back to Faclon 4.0:Allied Force. I
can let it sit for a week and hop right back in where I left off and
move the campaign forward a mission at a time..

Yep yep. Falcon 4 is still the benchmark for me.

My thoughts exactly.

But then I bought it anyway. And now I am struggling to make a decent
profile for my G940. And once that is done, I will probably try every
weapon system. Once.

Oh well, at least the start-up procedure is only half as long as the one
in DCS-BS. And there is no cyrillic involved. And the FPS, for once,
seem decent with today's hardware.

But then, all that to get the illusion of flying a plane that proved
vastly inferior to Twitter for spreading democracy in the ME. Go figure...

Regards,
Mr. S.

PS. On the other hand, I skipped the iRacing thing and went straight for
NetKar (best 15€ spent on a sim lately !).

Brilliant!
WHS. :-)

I enjoyed A10-Cuba, but only because it was ahead of its time in terms of flight
model and high-res frame rate. The aircraft itself never excited me in any way, and
I think that's part of my lack of motivation now. If I wanted to fly an ugly, slow,
heavy lump of metal plate I'd reinstall FSX or Flaming Cliffs.

The A10 always seemed very popular to a US audience though, so it may prove to be a
wise choice.

The Trento hill climb is absolutely superb, and I've driven NKPro more in the last
few weeks than in all the years I owned it before. However I still think iRacing
represents the pinnacle of modern sim code. The cars and tracks feel superb. Sadly
the fracking service they built around it is very Apple-like.... too expensive and
too "my way or the highway", and I could never settle there.... it was like being a
member of a cult sometimes, not a sim racing community.

I miss the forums more than I miss the racing, but I do think everyone with an
interest in racing sims should try one of the cheap introductory offers. These days
the basic package is much better than it used to be on the road side, and the MX-5
is a real pleasure to drive.

It has both 32 bit and 64 bit exe's. The 32 bit seems to be fine but I
assume that it'll choke on bigger missions.

I've flown a few MP missions and haven't seen any stand out bugs yet. The
aircraft is a complex beast which will keep me busy for many hours I'm
sure.
